A Brave New World: Designer Babies with Custom "Defects"

(this one's for you Katrina!)

Just came across this tonight. Apparently MSNBC posted a story about "made-to-order" babies that would have their parents' defects such as dwarfism or deafness. The procedure costs about $15,000 per attempt!! One lady who considered the embryo screening procedure but has settled on adopting a dwarf baby said, "You cannot tell me that I cannot have a child who's going to look like me. It's just unbelievably presumptuous and they're playing God."

I can only think that some people these days have too much money. Once upon a time, a couple it was enough just to have a child and for it to be healthy. Now they must resemble their parents to an exacting degree! I have no doubt children born of these couple who elect to go through this procedure would resemble their parents, just in a different way.
