The Daily Comment: Insensitivity

Another gem caused by Grammar Boy. (RIR = Recordable Incident Rate)

I am appalled at the wording in the RIRing to Go of our [Company Publication] Now, Issue 122.
“The good news is tempered by a tragedy in June, when 59-year-old [man] died while driving down from an Oregon logging site. Still, several business groups have dramatically reduced their RIRs in 2008…”

“Still” is just another way to say “then again,” which means the next bit of information may be just as important as the last bit of information. I am outraged that we can have a paragraph about how safety conscious we are and put one small blurb in the middle of it about the death of a man who worked for us.
